About the IIT department

Overview

University of Tsukuba's Intelligent Interaction Technologies Department is a part of the Graduate School of Systems and Information Engineering. The department offers the degrees Master of Engineering, and Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering. It also participates in the following undergraduate programs: College of Engineering Systems, and College of Computer Science.

Objectives

The research activities being carried out in the Department of Intelligent Interaction Technologies range from fundamental theoretical work to cutting-edge technologies, both of which are integral parts of planning, designing and constructing engineering systems concerning humans, machines and communications. These activities are concentrated on the following four fields:

They have the common research goal of fostering human-centered systems, in whole or in part, enabled by computers, machines, and communication systems. The students have opportunities to learn a broad range of subjects, from such constituting technologies as sensors and actuators, to such application technologies as intelligent robots and virtual reality systems. The curriculum is designed to help the students to become capable researchers and engineers, who can identify, formulate and solve challenging problems stemming from such engineering systems, using the knowledge and skills earned in the program.

We value the following features of our department: (i) Undertake the object-oriented approach for designing systems that are useful and truly called for, with the viewpoint of the users. (ii) Promote a well-balanced sense for making an optimal combination of functions achievable with hardware and intelligence realizable through software. (iii)Strive for systems that can cope with a wide variety of goals and environmental conditions, though actions, learning, adaptation and interaction with humans.

Nurturing highly skilled technicians and experts through project training

Our efforts to nurture highly skilled technicians and experts in Intelligent Interaction Systems were adopted in the Support Program for Distinctive University Education implemented by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

The College of Engineering Systems in the Third Cluster of Colleges and the Department of Intelligent Interaction Systems in the Graduate School of Systems and Information Engineering have an integrated 6-year curriculum designed to lead to a Master's degree. The goal of this integrated curriculum is to nurture highly skilled technicians and give them the ability to assimilate information, create plans and proposals, identify and solve problems, and communicate their ideas that cannot be acquired within the framework of the department. In this integrated undergraduate-graduate curriculum, numerous project-type laboratory courses are being offered. In the Master's Program, efforts are focusing on expanding and improving coursework, especially in project-type laboratory classes.

Degree

Master of Engineering The master's degrees will be granted to those who were in the master's program for two or more years and who have met the requirements for completion of the master's program according to the rules of University of Tsukuba for granting degrees.
Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering Doctor's degrees will be granted to those who were in the doctoral program for three or more years and submitted a thesis and passed the final examination. Those who have demonstrated excellent academic performance in research may acquire this degree after studying one or more years.
